CLOSE YOUR EYES ------ The Chemical Brothers

"Close your Eyes" is a terrific song part of the album Push the Button by The Chemical Brothers.

Push the Button BTW is the fifth studio album by British electronica group The Chemical Brothers, first released in January 2005. It won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in January 2006. It was certified Gold by the BPI on January 28, 2005.

And for those who have been living in some other planet for a few years, The Chemical Brothers are the English electronic music duo Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, well-known for their live sets, and pioneers of the big beat electronic dance genre which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s.

Close Your Eyes is arguably one of their finest tracks, with wonderful electronic features, voices and percusion, awesomely nice mutli-layered textures and really simple tune. It just works brilliantly!

STRIPPED ------ Depeche Mode

"Stripped" is Depeche Mode's fifteenth UK single, released on February 10, 1986. It was the first single from the album Black Celebration, and the band's thirteenth overall and sixth consecutive single to hit the UK Top 20, peaking at #15. "Stripped" is well known for its innovative use of sampling. The underlying beat is a distorted and slowed-down sound of a motorcycle engine running, while the main melody begins with a car's ignition starting, and the end uses sounds of fireworks.

The band's U.S. label Sire Records, however, decided to use the B-side "But Not Tonight" in the soundtrack to the movie Modern Girls and included the song on US editions of Black Celebration. As a result, the single was flipped, and released as "But Not Tonight" in the United States. The single did not chart. The band was not happy with this decision, seeing "But Not Tonight" as a useless poppy track recorded in less than a day.

Anyway, this song is a truly awesome masterpiece that you shouldn´t miss!

BTW, the music video for "Stripped" was the last Depeche Mode video to be directed by Peter Care and was filmed outside of Hansa Studios.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE ------ Spiritualized

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is a song part of the third studio album by Spiritualized -also called LaGWAFiS- , released in June 1997.

The title of the album is taken from the philosophical novel Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, the context being: "Only philosophers embark on this perilous expedition to the outermost reaches of language and existence. Some of them fall off, but others cling on desperately and yell at the people nestling deep in the snug softness, stuffing themselves with delicious food and drink. 'Ladies and Gentlemen,' they yell, 'we are floating in space!' But none of the people down there care."

OK, the song itself is quite a change of pace compared to some others we have published before in this blog ;), but somehow it has something that forces you to keep coming for more all the time... is like a spell cast on you which you cannot get rid of no matter how hard you try...

Some other listeners' comments:

*"This song is a strange kind of magic"

*
"Don't know why, but I just love the moment in the beginning, when the woman is saying 'Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space.' - her voice sounds so... sad"

*"Mesmerizingly beautiful. Something about this song really almost haunts (or maybe “lingers in” is a better description, since "haunts" sounds so negative) my thoughts and draws me to listen to it again."

Anyway, give it a try!

Wise men say
Only fools rush in
Only fools rush in
But i, I cant help
I cant help falling
Falling in love with you

BEYOND THE WASTELAND ------ Nobuo Uematsu

"Beyond the Wasteland" is a truly amazing song part of the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Original Soundtrack originally composed by Nobuo Uematsu.

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is the 2005 CGI film sequel to the original game. Its soundtrack album, was released on September 28, 2005, containing new material created specifically for the movie, as well as arrangements of tunes from the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack.

Both the original tracks and the arrangements cover a variety of musical styles, including orchestral, choral, classical piano, and rock music; Variety noted that the styles vary between "sparse piano noodlings, pop metal thrashings and cloying power ballads"...

...And that is precisely what makes the whole thing so great; that particular combination. In Beyond the wasteland, we will find heartbeats together with a haunting piano as the mysterious opening for the track that leads to a surprisingly powerful instrumental explosion with a rock-style background from 1:50 onwards...

Quite an experience. Give it a try!

D-TECNOLIFE ------ UVERworld

Uverworld or stylized as UVERworld is a Japanese rock band consisting of 5 members that originated from Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The band is well known for their mixture of musical genres such as hard rock, electronic, and beat-boxing. UVERchan, the band’s mascot, is a fictional bear-bat like character, which appears on several of their covers.

The band made their debut with today's song: the single "D-tecnoLife", which served as the 2nd opening theme song for the anime Bleach. Three months later, Uverworld's second single, "Chance!" was used as the theme for the PSP game Bleach: Heat the Soul 2 and was the last single released in 2005.

So why is this song so special?, well, for starters it's a great example of modern J-Rock... it's a catchy tune with a powerful rhythm that builds up and never stops...

You've been hurt by an unspeakable pain and sadness;
Together, let's carry each other's incredible pasts;
Don't give up on living!

Whoa-
Whoa-
I held your hand.

Will I end up losing them someday?
I want to protect you and your smile, so;
Even if the voice that calls to me is dying..
Even if the wind that follows along time disappears...

ON THE PRECIPICE OF DEFEAT ------ Shiro Sagisu

"On the precipice of defeat" is a haunting melody by composer Shiro Sagisu, part of the "Bleach" anime series original soundtrack. It is probably the most significant track from this awesome OST, and it conveys a dense and powerful atmosphere that boosts the development of the action within the series.

BTW, Shiro Sagisu is a well-known Japanese music producer and composer. With a career spanning over 25 years (beginning in the late 1970s), he is best known for his work as a record producer for acts including Misia, Satoshi Tomiie, and Ken Hirai. MY CURSE ------ Killswitch Engage

"My Curse" (sometimes incorrectly referred to as "This Is My Curse" is a song by American metalcore band Killswitch Engage, the song is released as the first single from their fourth album As Daylight Dies.

It reached #21 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, surpassing the band's last breakthrough single The End of Heartache, which topped #31, and has been nominated for a Grammy.

The music video was directed by Lex Halaby, who has also directed videos for Hoobastank and Mudvayne. My Curse, along with the rest of the album, has been generally praised by critics but has received substantial criticism for breaking away from the style established in preceding albums, toning down their previously "harder" sound. As said above, My Curse 's style is a mix of the raw metalcore sound of Killswitch Engage and melancholic intersections/lyrics.

The song is featured in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The song is also featured as downloadable content for Rock Band as part of the "Roadrunner 6 Pack". The song also featured in Burnout Dominator and in Burnout Paradise.

Some listeners' comments below:

"Listening to it now. The opening guitar solo took my breath away just like old times lol. If there was a category for best metal love song ever, this would be it."

"the accoustic start rly makes the song so much more epic, one of their best songs.TRULY AWESOME"

"Dig" is the second single released by American alternative rock band Incubus from their sixth studio album Light Grenades (2006). LOW ------ Coldplay

Q mag write from Martin about this song: "A turning point. We had this piece we'd written on tour in Zurich and I'd listened to it on my computer and think, That's a great thing. And then I was in San Diego, and just as I was leaving the hotel, I had this idea, so I went to the lobby piano and worked out these chords. And then we booked ourselves into a tiny rehearsal space and we all got such a buzz from playing that it made us realise we had gone wrong on the recordings of all the other songs. I realised last August that I was missing everyone else and Low was what brought us back together."

Low is indeed one of the most charming songs from the awesome X&Y, third studio album from Coldplay released the 6th of June of 2005. The album itself has been considered a landmark achievement of the band, topping many charts worldwide, including the United Kingdom and United States, the latter being their first. With accumulated sales of over 10 million units, X&Y is the best-selling album released in 2005 worldwide

"Bones" was the fifth and final single from An End Has a Start, the second album by Editors. It was only released in Continental Europe under the PIAS label as a download only single. "Bones" was one of the first songs off An End Has A Start to be performed live, along with "The Weight Of The World" in 2006. It has since gone through many changes, most notably the bridge and outro of the song which was previewed via a short video made by the band months before the album came out.

The video includes on stage and behind the scenes footage shot during the European tour in March and April 2008. It was directed by the band's bassist Russell Leetch.

These are the comments from a few listeners:

"One of the best songs I've ever heard. This band does not get the credit or recognition they deserve."

SQUARE ONE ------ Coldplay

‘Square One’ is the opening track to Coldplay’s 2005 album, X&Y. It carries a distinct anthemic quality with a ‘building’ progressive sound.

The lyrics are just awesome, and the song usually served the band as the opening for their live concerts until Viva la Vida was released:

You're in control
Is there anywhere you wanna go?
You're in control
Is there anything you wanna know?
The future's for discovering
The space in which we're traveling

From the top of the first page
To the end of the last day
From the start in your own way
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are...

CHASED BY... I DON´T KNOW WHAT ------ Snow Patrol

Chased by... I don´t Know What, is the ninth track from When It´s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up, the second album by the indie rock group Snow Patrol, released on 24 April 2001 in the UK and 5 March in the USA. The album charted at #129 in the UK and failed to sell well upon its initial release. But its re-release saw it eventually go Gold in the UK.

This particular song deviates a little bit from the popular rock style of this bands and plays around the concept of "finding calm in the middle of a complete chaos".

A powerful song that sounds different and refreshing; specially recommended for people that enjoy the music of this successful Irish band and want to discover and listen to a not-so-known track from their early beginnings.

METAL SCRATCHIN ------ Hideki Naganuma

"Metal Scratchin" is an amazing song part of the Sonic Rush videogame OST -released for Nintendo DS in 2005-.

The music of Sonic Rush was written by acclaimed Sega composer Hideki Naganuma. It was released in Japan as a CD, SONIC RUSH Original Groove Rush, on November 23, 2005 through Wavemaster Studios. The CD has 45 tracks, seven of which are digital remixes rather than master tracks.

The tune is mainly used for the different boss battles during the game... I think this is some of the best Robotnik boss music. It sounds very mechanical and panicked at the same time. And, as odd as it is for him to be saying "Get ready to be schooled," I think Mike Pollock sounds really good saying it.

Catchy and very powerful, if you are into fast-paced music you can´t miss this one!

SPEED OF SOUND ------ Coldplay

"Speed of Sound"
is a song by English alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all members of the band for their third album, X&Y. Built around a piano riff, the song builds into a huge, synthesizer-heavy chorus. It was released on 23 May 2005 by Parlophone Records as the lead single from the album.

Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin admitted that the song was developed after the band had listened to English alternative rock singer Kate Bush. The song's drumbeat is similar to Bush's 1985 song "Running Up That Hill". Upon the song's release, it charted in the UK Singles Chart in the number two position. In the United States, it reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Speed of Sound" is a piano-based song. The song benefits from an insistently ornate keyboard riff and a busy but less-hummable chorus, in which the song builds into a huge drum beat and a synthesizer-heavy chorus, which also includes an upbeat tempo.

The lyrics in the song are cryptic; the ending lines of the third verse emphasize in belief and faith: "If you could see it then you’d understand/ah when you see it then you’ll understand," and "Some things you have to believe/others are puzzles puzzling me." The fourth verse in the second verse alludes to discovering your place in the world: "How long am I gonna stand/with my head stuck under the sand," and "If you never try then you’ll never know".

The song received positive reviews, with critics noting the music's sound and memorable lyrics. Both the song and its "Thin White Duke" remix were nominated for the 2007 Grammy Awards, the latter of which won in the category of Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

The song is built around a simple guitar lick by Jonny Buckland. The track includes a hypnotic pace, with Will Champion adding a metronomic beat to the drums. The song features a synthesizer hook notable from Kraftwerk's "Computer Love". It also adds a chiming note to more abrasive riffs during the breakdown near the end of the song.

The second verse in line four Martin sings about a trace of irony: "Or write a song nobody had sung/Or do something that's never been done." The third line of the third verse Martin alludes to fear, but changes to joy: "Tell me how do you feel?/Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak/And they're talking it to me."The fifth verse Martin summarizes about an individual who is lost and trying to discover the unknown: "So you don't know where you're going/But you want to talk/And you feel like you're going where you've been before/You'll tell anyone who will listen but you feel ignored.

According to Josh Tyrangiel of Time magazine, the meaning to "Talk" are based on how Martin "wants to teach us how to feel better about ourselves, and his lessons have the moral superiority disguised as sensitivity that marked Bono's mighty mullet period." Tyrangiel interpreted the lyrics, "Are you lost or incomplete/ Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece/ Tell me how you feel", with Martin begging in the song.
